New York Spring

It was 80°F last week, that’s about 27°C. Today it’s cold enough I got snowed upon for a few minutes, while I went for a walk around the park. My daughter had checked the weather forecast before we headed out, hoping to avoid exactly such a surprise! Spring time is just too wild and unpredictable for apps to be helpful.

It rained for a few minutes just as we were arriving to admire some friendly ducks. Then it snowed. As we were quickly retreating from our stroll, balls of icy hail pelted us for a minute or two until it turned into rain again. It was very cold and annoying but my child stayed in good spirits and we moved quickly to keep warm, hurrying to get out of the weather. Of course the rain stopped just as we were approaching home, hauling ass and remarking to each other how none of this was mentioned in the weather report.

I spent most of my childhood in California, where seasons are not as dramatically changing through the year (certainly not in a single day). It was a shocking adjustment the first few times I felt the temperatures start to drop, and it stayed cold for months. Now I love the harsh winter in New York though.  I have a much beloved knitwear collection, lovingly created by hand from my knitting hobby over many years. Snow and ice are important for me to be able to really put my wool mittens and scarves to work.

Lately it’s hard to know what to expect when I go outside. I still see many people wearing winter coats, and others that are already dressed in shorts! I’ve been wearing a lightweight jacket sometimes layered with a heavy sweater myself, yet somehow we are all getting it wrong at some point. It feels kind of ridiculous but I need to remember, to travel with an umbrella, and sunglasses too, because I’ll probably need both.
